into everyday language around the world to describe human behaviour in a way that feels

Relevant.

Many people debate whether curiosity is more of a blessing or a curse, but both can coincide. The story behind Pandora’s box comes from a Greek myth about the first woman, Pandora, who was given a sealed container and warned not to open it. The curiosity was overwhelming, and no matter how much she tried resisting temptation, she eventually opened the box. By doing so, she unintentionally released hardship into the world but even after things went wrong, there was still hope. Pandora’s box represents the double-edged sword of curiosity. Some mysteries are better left unsolved while others can lead to growth and learning.

Just like curiosity, ambition and excitement can be thrilling, but sometimes they come with consequences. Icarus was a young man who tried to escape imprisonment with his father, Daedalus, who was a master craftsman in Greek mythology. They were locked up in a tower in the sea. Daedalus crafted wings out of feathers and wax. Before they took off, he warned his son not to fly too low where the sea would soak his wings, and not too high where the sun would melt the wax. At first, he stayed close to his father, but the thrill of flying consumed him as he flew higher and higher. He ignored Daedalus’ warnings and eventually flew too close to the sun. The wax melted and the feathers came apart. Icarus fell from the sky and was lost in the waves. Icarus’ story teaches us that striving for great heights is exciting, but it’s important to stay within certain limits because crossing them can lead to serious consequences. The myth serves as a reminder to balance ambition and thrill with caution and care.

While Pandora and Icarus show the consequences of curiosity and unchecked ambition, another Greek myth reminds us that danger doesn’t always come from our choices, but our vulnerabilities as well. Even the strongest people have their own weaknesses. The story of Achilles comes from a Greek myth about a great warrior who was almost invincible. As a child, Achilles’ mother tried to make him invulnerable by dipping him into the River Styx, but to protect him, she held on to his heel so the waters wouldn’t take him away, leaving his heel unprotected. He grew up to be well known for his strength, but he had no idea how his heel would lead to his downfall. During the Trojan War, an enemy discovered Achilles’ weakness and shot an arrow at his heel, leaving him unable to fight, and this led to his death later. His story highlights that no matter how strong you are, one small weakness can outweigh your strength. Perfection is an illusion and not one person exists without flaws.

These myths have lasted thousands of years because they capture universal experiences that we still recognize today. Curiosity, ambition, and vulnerability are all parts of life that everyone deals with. Whether it’s opening Pandora’s box, flying too close to the sun, or facing an Achilles’ heel, Greek stories give us a way to understand ourselves and the choices we make. Despite the stories being ancient, the lessons are still relevant.
