What is Christ the Redeemer?

When you think of a famous tourist spot in Brazil, the first thought that comes to your mind will probably be Christ the Redeemer. But what exactly is Christ the Redeemer? Christ the Redeemer is a monumental statue of Jesus Christ located at the summit of Mount Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Standing 98 feet tall, this statue is the fourth largest statue of Jesus in the world, with his arms outstretched towards the city, spanning 92 feet. Built in 1931, it is one of the most visited tourist spots in Brazil, attracting nearly 2 million visitors annually. 

History behind the construction of Christ the Redeemer

The idea of constructing a massive statue of Jesus Christ in Brazil originated way back in the 1850s, by a Vincentian priest named Pedro Maria Boss. He even requested Princess Isabel, the daughter of the Emperor of Brazil at that time, to fund the project. However, this idea was abandoned after the Declaration of the Republic in 1889, which separated the church from the state in the country. 

The idea was later reimplemented by the Roman Catholic archdiocese and the locals as Rio, after WWI, as there were concerns on Brazil becoming an unfaithful country. On April 4, 1922, the former president of Brazil, Epitacio Pessoa, approved the idea of constructing the statue on the summit of Mount Corcovado. After 9 years of construction, the building of the statue was completed. 

Historical Significance behind the construction of Christ the Redeemer 

After being granted the permission to start the construction, Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa was instructed to design the statue. He came up with a few designs, including the idea of Jesus carrying a cross in one hand and a globe in the other, and also the idea for the statue to face the sun from the top of the mountain. He then chose to design the statue into the design we all know today — Jesus Christ with his arms wide. You might wonder, what is the significance of this design? Jesus’ outstretched arms represent a welcoming gesture, as he recognises his followers as children of God. At the time when Brazil was starting to lose its faith, the statue served as a reminder that Christians can always turn to Jesus for support and comfort. As for the location, it was designed on the top of Mount Corcovado so that Jesus could watch over Rio, symbolising his eternal love and care for his followers. The Christ the Redeemer was designed like a cross reminding Christians to remember all of the sacrifices Jesus has made for them.

Conclusion 

Christ the Redeemer has made a lasting impact in both Christianity and in Brazil. Besides its religious significance, it was even named as the Seven Wonders of the World on July 7, 2007, drawing nearly 2 million tourists annually. As for today, the statue of Christ the Redeemer continues to serve as a source of inspiration for those seeking faith, prayer and love– just as Jesus taught them.
